Stephen graduated from Harvard College in 1742 and he became A School Teacher in Falmouth Me. (now Portland)
He moved to Gorham when Portland was destroyed by Mowatt in 1775. After the Revolutionary War, he never resumed Public Office. One histrorian suggested that this might have been because either he was distrusted as A Loyalist or because of his weight of 24
He was also Town Clerk, Portland for 22 years, Clerk of the First Parish Church for 23 years, Clerk of the proprietors of Common Lands for many years, and the first Clerk of the Judicial Courts and Register of Probate for Cum Co.
